A petition for a protective order is a civil matter and a protective order may be issued to protect anyone in reasonable fear of imminent bodily injury or death from another. A protective order can temporarily or permanently entitle the petitioner to certain relief including an Order that the alleged abuser be restrained from contacting the petitioner, etc. Temporary protective orders are issued for a term of 72 hours (a temporary/preliminary protective order).
