What is a Guardian Ad Litem?

In Virginia, a guardian ad litem is an attorney appointed by the court to represent the best interests and welfare of a child. Whether or not a guardian ad litem is needed is up to the court. Generally, a court will only appoint a guardian ad litem in a custody or visitation dispute if it finds that the child’s needs are not adequately represented through the parents and their attorneys.
